Rehabilitation Technology

Rehabilitation Technology

At Horizon Rehabilitation we pride ourselves on our ability to identify patients who will benefit from rehabilitation technology. Once you’ve been seen by a neurological physiotherapist, we may discuss the possibility of utilising one or more of the following pieces of equipment to help enhance your recovery or make it easier for you to exercise safely. Devices are available via a prescription from one of our therapists or available at lower cost through subscription or use within sessions.

What is Functional Electrical Stimulation ?

Functional Electrical Stimulation is an intervention which uses a small electrical current to deliver signals directly to muscles. This can bypass the circuits that may have been affected by a neurological condition such as stroke, spinal cord injury, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s.

  • It can allow muscles that are paralysed or weakened by damage to the nervous system to be activated.
  • It can be used to help improve walking and when someone has Foot Drop

  • In the hand and arm, Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) can be used to activate paralysed muscles, improve sensation and reduce pain.
  • It can also be used for shoulder subluxation.

Book an assessment for Neurological Physiotherapy to see if FES or NMES may be suitable for you as part of a programme.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (or electrical muscles stimulation EMS) uses the same technology as FES.

It is a rehabilitation treatment that uses a small electrical signal to activate muscles, treat sensory problems, support shoulder subluxation and manage pain.

It is very similar to TENS (but not the same as). TENS delivers electrical stimulation through pads on the skin that can alter the transmission of pain signals. NMES specifically activates muscles.

The devices we use have specific settings which we can change to enable muscles to be activated.

Please seek advice from a trained clinician before you purchase a device.

Empowering Marie to fight back against Parkinsonism on her own terms

Over the past several years, Marie has experienced a gradual decline in her walking and balance and also her upper limb mobility, particularly in her right arm’s range of movement, notably around the shoulder.

Karen, our Clinical Director, explains why Strolll is such an innovative and engaging tool for supporting rehabilitation for people with Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions.
